Pomegranates

I planted a pomegranate tree last year and got one pomegranate. ย This year, there are about twenty growing and they’re starting to turn red. ย I love eating them and they are full of antioxidants. ย This one might be ready in a couple of weeks if the deer doesn’t get it first. My deer are not afraid of me any more. If I see a deer even looking at my pomegranates, I’ll be right there with a big stick: “Step away from the tree and nobody gets hurt.” If the deer does eat it, he is going to have to watch his back.ย I know where he lives.

I’ve never had one!!!!! (embarrassed) I don’t think they had these in Ireland when I was growing up!! LOL ๐Ÿ™‚

    What are they like? Taste?

    • Jenny says:

They are sweet and tart, a bit like sour cherries, but very messy to eat. I lay a big towel down on my lap and pull the seeds off one by one. They rival blueberries with an enormous list of health benefits. They are only around in the fall so you can try one soon. Let me know if you like it. (I make my own jello with pomegranate/blueberry juice all the time – yumm!) http://pomegranates.org/

Thanks, Jenny….I will have to try these out! Sounds interesting! Sounds like something my grandkids would love eating, too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Aw, don’t be embarrassed Becky. Just because you’ve never had pomegranates doesn’t mean others look at you like you should know what they are. I’m sure there’s things you’ve had that I’ve never heard of…
Try the pomegranates when they have them at the store. They do have the sweet and tart taste like Jenny said. Just keep an eye on Jenny’s ripe pomegranates when hers get ready for eating and she post about them again, so you’ll know what color the best one are ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you, Rhonda….I will do that!!! ๐Ÿ˜€

          Your welcome Becky ๐Ÿ™‚
As I said in another post. I grew up eating these as a kid and I think your grandkids would like them. I agree with Jenny using sour cherry as an example. Don’t know why kids like sour candy, but atleast pomegranates have a little bit more of a sweeter taste with the tart…

Jenny, that pomegranite is gorgeous! Is the tree potted, or planted in the ground? What a beautiful piece of fruit!

    • Jenny says:

I never thought I could grow pomegranates so this is pretty exciting. The tree is in the ground. I’ll take pictures when they are ripe, too.
