The dark side of popcorn

How can something as good as popcorn have a dark side?  I made my fluffy paper lunch bag pop corn Friday night and I guess a hull got stuck up inside my gum.  I woke up Saturday with swollen and sore gums.  Flossing didn’t help and I wonder if it pushed the hull up even farther. This morning I woke up with a headache on the same side and even more pain and swelling.  I called my dentist’s office and left a message asking where I could go today for emergency hull extraction. She called back and said I was her second call this weekend for popcorn hulls (who knew?) and told me to rinse with hot salt water and put some Anbesol on it. I also took a Tylenol. It helped a lot, in fact I don’t know if the hull came out or if I’m just masking the pain and it’s still up there. That’s why I’m not big on pain pills because masking the pain doesn’t solve the problem.  You have to find the cause and fix that. If I could see it, maybe I could do something but I can’t see up there in the back. Well, I know this will pass but the bigger issue is what will this trauma do to my popcorn-enjoying experience?  Will I be overcome by anxiety? Will I hesitate before every crunchy bite?  Should I chew and floss between each bite? Should I eat it one piece at a time and first remove the hull? I LOVE popcorn.  Will life ever be the same? Will I have to snack on pudding?

Jenny, how are things going with the poporn or should I ask have you had any popcorn this week after your issues with poporn last week?…

Hi Jenny! Sorry to hear about your popcorn catastrophe! Have you tried the
hull-less popcorn? It’s pretty good and you won’t have that problem anymore!
I’m sure there are many websites with it, but I use:

    http://amishcountrypopcorn.com/hullesspopcorn1.html

They sell popcorn, oils, butter, etc. Hope this helps!

Celebrating 30 yrs of marriage today :))

Happy 30th Anniversary! You must be soul mates to get this far with no restraining orders… 🙂
And thanks for the hull-less popcorn info. I’ve ordered hull-less before (Fireworks brand) but it’s always so tiny and I like the big and fluffy kind. If you ever see big, fluffy & hull-less, please let me know.

Jenny, we really are!! Probably only had a handful of arguments in those 30 yrs, too.
Nope, no restraining orders yet, and don’t see any in the future. We’re too old now and set in our ways… (I’m 48, he’s 52) Met at the local skating rink…how’s that for cute??!? LOL!
        Hugs,

Congrats Becky! You both sound like high school sweethearts 🙂
I really dont see how women do it, but some seem to manage better than others. I’m sure you knew you had a keeper. Its good you found a real man that makes you happy. You have to be happy to be with him for 30 years. Good for you 🙂

My parents were married 45 years (I’m 44 years old). Hope you last another 30+ years…

          Take care,
          Rhonda

Aww, thank you for noticing that side of me. I try to be, but negativity and negative people with no respect for others really can push my buttons. Good thing Jenny monitors her blog or it would be a war zone here…lol…(thank you Jenny for a well controlled place where your fans can chit chat with you and each other in peace 🙂 )…
I do have a side to me that isnt very nice when it comes to people not respecting others, but for the most part my nice side shines 🙂
You seem like a friendly nice person as well. How long have you been watching Jenny’s show when she was on air?…

Jenny…I found this website that claims to have hulless popcorn that is “much larger than other hulless popcorn varieties.” Might give it a go:

        Hope this helps!

How long have you been eating popcorn before this happened? If youve been eating it for years with no problem this might just be a once in a lifetime thing, but I can see why you would feel like you would hesitate the next time you ate popcorn because it’s very uncomfortable with a hull down in your gum line. I love popcorn too but I dont eat it as much because of the hulls…
I had the same problem that Diana has with chips, but my problem is the ridged part on the roof of the mouth. It feels like what youve described, with the hull deep in the gums. It hurts I’m sure…
Warm salty water does help, but Jenny try deluting some peroxide with some water just enough to make a bubble effect and make like a mouthwash and see if it will bubble anything you have in the gum area out. I usually use a tablespoon of peroxide with a cup of water and just wrinse. I do that whenever I have issues with chips and popcorn and it helps as well. It dont taste good but it does help…

Oh and Jenny you do have a very nice smile. I think you have the perfect orbit smile…cha-ching 🙂

    Take care,
    Rhonda

    • Jenny says:

I didn’t need the peroxide, thank goodness, because it seems a lot better today, but it does make good sense, thank you.

      • Rhonda says:

Oh youre welcome, Jenny. Keep enjoying your popcorn. Just make sure you brush your teeth afterwards and rinse really well. Thats what I do and I dont worry about it as much as I use too. I probably eat popcorn once or twice a week, but I could probably eat it more often like you do, because it is a good snack food…
        I have a question. Just being curious…
Do you floss before or after you brush your teeth?

        Rhonda

        • Jenny says:

I floss before brushing and never miss a day.

          • Rhonda says:

Oh good. You floss the right way. Youre suppose to floss before you brush. Just wondering if you flossed before you brushed your teeth friday night after the popcorn…

I dont know if you know this, but I was told by my dentist that toothpicks are bad for your gums. They damage the pyramids where your gum goes up between your teeth, so I stopped using them a while back, because I had no idea they were bad until she told me not to use them anymore…

  4. Diana says:

Oh my! Sounds painful! Doesn’t it suck when you love to eat something and it has some kind of effect on your mouth so your all cautious about it or stay away from it? Not so much fun! That’s how I feel about chips, I love them with salsa or guacamole but I had a bad experience with it cutting my gums, so I am VERY careful now. :/ Besides your unfortunate popcorn experience, how was your weekend?

    • Jenny says:

After the Tylenol, my weekend was good. We went to the Grove yesterday, which I always enjoy, and today I made peach pie with the first white peaches from my tree. It’s almost ready to eat…
